When I was getting ready to meet a prospective Client yesterday, keeping one eye on the clock to make sure I was on time, I thought about what it means to “show up”.
Of course you want to be on time (which I was) and it goes without saying that you want to be at the right place (thank goodness for GPS on occasion), but what else is there?
I leave my phone in the car so they know they are my priority, I hand them the feature sheets I have printed for them (in order of showing so it’s less confusing) and I ask for their opinion of what we’ve seen and take notes. We shake hands and exchange hellos and generally try to get to know each other a little. It’s important for us both to find out what has brought us together.
I try not to think about my youngest at home throwing up all over (which was happening today), or what I will get at the grocery store after we’re done, or the Client I may meet with next week. Because that is not what they need from me. They need my attention on their task at hand, my professional opinions and my guidance, especially when it comes time for the legal contracts (which are serious business).
I am only human and there are times that I have to gently prod myself back to the moment and ask the occasional “Pardon?” when I miss something, but I try my best to “Show up”. Every time. The Client I met today (and his daughter) left with a smile and a promise to be in touch and after they were out of sight I called home to check in.
Good news, my youngest was no longer throwing up (her older sister was) and I headed home confident in my skills as a Realtor®.
